Having two sentences which are absolutely incoherent and have no link between each other is a complete no-no for any academic writing. In order to make your sentences more coherent and appear as a comprehensive whole, you should try to use phrases that help in linking sentences. It gives more structure to the paragraph, too. For instance, you may use some of the following phrases:

  • As such
  • This illustrates that
  • This evidence shows
  • It is clearly demonstrated that

 

  1. Structure of the Essay

The task of a writer does not end at writing decent and coherent sentences. You need to provide a structure as well to your piece of writing. An essay usually is supposed to comprise 3 parts, namely, the introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction should provide an overview of what your essay is all about and give a brief outline of what would follow in the body of the essay. The body is perhaps the most important partof your essay as this is the section in which you are going to build your argument in more detail. You may divide the body into separate paragraphs, each pertaining to different points. The conclusion should ideally, then provide a summarized version of your argument and you should be able to end your essay smoothly. Abrupt endings are always a put-off.

Introduction

  • First sentence should provide a brief description of the topic of the essay
  • In the second sentence, you need to state your hypothesis
  • The following sentence should be a linking sentencebetween the first two sentences
  • The final sentence of your introduction should cover the points that you will be mentioning in your essay.

 Body

  • Each point should have one paragraph allotted to it
  • Make use of examples to illustrate your point better
  • Keep your points well connected to your hypothesis throughout the body and wrap up the paragraph with this

Conclusion

  • Summarise the body of your essay in a couple of sentences
  • Make a re-assertion of your argument and try to delineate your approach to it
  • Finish off with a few recommendations
